The Visual Appeal Of Wrought Iron Planters

By Katrina Wheeler

There are plenty of ways to decorate the outside areas of a property. For those considering doing this, wrought iron planters are an option to consider. These attractive garden features come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit a few different needs.

During its production the material can be worked into a wide variety of styles. The attractive curve of scrolling is one such option although there are others. The end result provides a beautiful, vintage appearance and this is why so many people like it. On its own the planter will stand out, but with an array of flowers it can be a great centerpiece for an area.

Planting boxes come in sizes small enough for a single pot and large enough to hold a few. It is not strictly necessary to use pots though and sowing directly in to the planter is possible. In this case a liner will be needed to hold the soil in and there are a few options for this. This includes organic materials such as moss and coconut matting, as well as a few man-made fabrics.

Hanging baskets are a common garden feature and more often then not these are domed in shape. The material can be heavy though, therefore a basket made of it should be connected to a solid surface that is capable of holding the load. Chains and hooks are generally sold with the basket for the purpose of hanging it.

Ground level plant stands can be produced in straightforward box or circular shapes. However, it can be a nice touch to have them in the style of a garden accessory like a watering can. Gardeners will likely need to bend down to those without legs, so if this is a problem it can be sensible to opt for one that incorporates legs and puts it at a higher level. Before adding the plants move the box into position as it will be less cumbersome to handle.

The beauty of iron can make it desirable for indoor locations as well. The interior design of a home can be enhanced by the use of a few planters around a property. Smaller sizes are perfect for houseplants in a living room, bedroom or other location.

The traditional color of the material is black and many of the planters on the market come in this shade. It is not the only option though and it is possible to find colors such as silver and brown available. It pays to check what the material actually is when purchasing. In many cases cast iron and steel can be made to have the look of wrought iron and then marketed under the name. It can appear just as attractive although those looking for the genuine article may want to be sure that is what they are buying.

Customers have a variety of choice when it comes to finding wrought iron planters. Specialty plant retailers such as garden centers and wholesale nurseries will generally offer additional pieces and this can include planters. There are also online retailers that specialize in garden sales and some of the bigger online stores can also stock them. A trip to a nearby big box store may also bear fruit, with many offering garden accessories for sale.
